Médialab's talks at FOSDEM'19

Pour la cinquième année consécutive, le médialab sera représenté au FOSDEM, la rencontre européenne des développeurs de logiciels libres et open-source.

Event

Bruxelles, Belgique

February 2nd and 3rd, the medialab will be represented at the FOSDEM, the European meeting of developers of free and open-source software.

The médialab's talks

Paul Girard and Guillaume Plique will present new developments produced by the lab and some use cases.

Using networks to study 18th century French tradeFrance started to compile statistics about its trade in 1716. The "Bureau de la Balance du Commerce" (Balance of Trade's Office) centralized local reports of imports/exports by commodities produced by french tax regions. Many statistical manuscript volumes produced by this process have been preserved in French archives. This communication of Paul Girard will relate how and why we used network technologies to create a research instrument based on the transcriptions of those archives in the TOFLIT18 research project.Developing data structures for JavaScriptThere is a tenacious misconception nowadays that people working with JavaScript do not need to know much about data structures. The intention of this presentation of Guillaume Plique is therefore to compile series of tips, tricks and use cases regarding the implementation of data structures in JavaScript and the challenges it poses.

Note the "Gephi JS: Exploring the dystopian future of a Javascript Gephi" talk by Mathieu Jacomy, former médialab's member. He will present the future of large-scale network analysis and visualization in Gephi software and the possibilities of Graphology  (developped by Guillaume Plique) and sigma.js.
