Artificial Inquiries: A Companion for Workers in the Age of AI

What happens when a research protocol escapes from the laboratory and lands on your desk?

Notice

Developed by researchers at Sciences Po’s médialab, Artificial Inquiries is the first public release of a collective investigation into the effects of artificial intelligence on professional life. It focuses on the challenges posed by tools like ChatGPT, known as large language models (LLMs). For the past year, the EL2MP team (“Ecologies of LLM Practices”) has worked closely with students and professionals — from law to economics, administration to education, and the arts to the cultural sector — to co-design a participatory and experimental protocol.

The vademecum is the core artifact of that protocol: a modular workbook composed of thematic blocks of exercises (on prompting, evaluation, and much more). It invites you to slow down, reflect, and document your use of AI in your everyday work. Whether you’re a regular user or a cautious skeptic, this notebook offers a co-inquiry. It guides you through a careful and honest observation of your interactions with LLMs. It also encourages you to share them in small group settings, collectively take hold of these technologies, and surface the shared concerns that arise from their use.

Artificial Inquiries is not a report, a white paper, or a handbook; it’s an invitation to actively examine the consequences of LLMs on work from the inside. Designed as a companion for professionals, this vademecum aims to bring workers and their expertise back to the center of the conversation on artificial intelligence, through collective discussion grounded in the fine-grained observation of everyday practice.

This vademecum offers an inventive research protocol for academics to iterate on, a reflective tool for professionals, a pedagogical resource for teachers looking to engage students critically, and a framework for collective inquiry within unions or organizing spaces. The EL2MP team encourages others to remix it, reproduce it, or adapt it to a wide variety of professional contexts.
