Habiter les Internets

Forming research groups to explore and represent user practices on social networks.

Research

Research project

‘Habiter les Internet’, a collective research project combining social sciences and design, gave rise to a series of interventions at the Villefontaine School of Design, both remotely and in person, from December 2024 to March 2025. This workshop is part of the broader research projects ‘Styles de Modération’ and ‘Politique du Lore’.

In the research practice that inspires this project, teaching is approached from the perspective of forming investigative collectives that may be composed of individuals with different commitments to the issue addressed by the project, with an emphasis on devising methods for bringing participants together into an investigative collective.

This led us to conduct an ambitious three-month workshop entitled Habiter les Internets, the protocol of which we hope to replicate in other contexts, in particular by transforming it into a syllabus capable of:

  1. Raise awareness among UX/UI design students of the social issues raised by social media, beyond the needs of individual users alone;
  2. Propose methods for describing the living practices developed by users on social media, drawing in particular on auto-ethnographic methods that encourage students to pay attention to their own practices;
  3. Generate design projects based on the description of these practices.
