How do the data and other numbers that constantly transform the world into encrypted information interact with our collective lives?

Les publics de la mise en nombre, coordinated by Antoine Hardy and Laurène Le Cozanet, will be published on 12 June by Presses des Mines, with the support of the Institut francilien recherche innovation société (Ifris).

Conceived as a meeting of quantification studies and datafication studies around the question of publics, it opens up new avenues for analysing the power of numbers: power to quantify a segment of reality, to discuss the perimeter of a measure or the conventions on which it is based; power to shape social relations, to bring collective beings and political causes into existence; power to determine the uses of numbers, whether political, administrative or commercial; power to disrupt, avoid, reappropriate, subvert or resist their authority.

How are numbers addressed to their audiences? How do audiences intervene in the very process of numbering? And what role does reception play in the creation of audiences? To find out, three parts bring together lively investigations by  Félicien Pagnon, Yves Mirman, Camille Beaurepaire, Martine Heudron, Juliette Piketty-Moine, Malik Hamila, Théo Régniez, Tristan Duverné, Jean-Baptiste Garrocq and Olivier Beraud Martin  - with a preface by Florence Millerand and an afterword by Alexandra Bidet.

To find out more, come along to the book launch with the authors. Nassima Abdelghafour and Thomas Tari will lead the discussion.
