On monday 29th October (2.30-4.30 pm), médialab' Sciences Po will welcome Dr. Alex de Sherbinin (University of Columbia, US) for a conference on "Climate change and displacement : Research Approaches and Findings".

Abstract

Migration has been identified as a potential outcome of climate change dating back to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s first assessment report in 1990. A decade later Norman Meyers estimated that by 2050, 212 million people will be displaced by drought and sea level rise associated with climate change. Over the past decade academic research and modeling work on environmental and climate migration has increased dramatically. This presentation focuses on research approaches to understanding the climate drivers of past migration as well as recent efforts to develop future projections of climate-induced migration, presenting findings that demonstrate that climate variation and change can be important factors that influence human mobility.

Contexte

This conference takes place within the framework of the Environmental Diplomacy and Geopolitics (EDGE) project, a EU-funded project implemented under the Horizon 2020 programme by the University of Liège, the University of Economics in Bratislava (EUBA) and Sciences Po Paris. Part of this project’s planned activities include the hosting of a rotating Chair in Environmental Diplomacy by each partner institution. Professor Clive Hamilton (Charles Sturt University, Australia) has served as the first EDGE Chair, followed by Dr. Alex de Sherbinin (Columbia University, USA). Professor Zetter will then take over as the last rotating Chair under the EDGE project and will conduct a series of lecture in Liège in November 2018.
