Researcher

Alex Kowalski received a PhD from New York University, and holds MAs in Philosophy/Epistemology of the Social Sciences (Paris-Sorbonne) and Sociology (NYU). She is a founding member of the Cultural Heritage Program at the Central European University, Vienna, Austria, where she has been on the permanent faculty since 2011 (Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology). Recent publications deal with Hungary's Holocaust memory, the social-political history of "heritage," UNESCO's World Heritage list, and French policies of patrimoine. I’ve just completed my main project so far, a (French-language) manuscript entitled Un Projet Francais. L'Inventaire Général et la Naissance du Patrimoine. My next big project, pursued this year at MediaLab, is entitled Following ANT -- an (english-language) intellectual history of Actor Network Theory. My work has received support from the Florence Gould Foundation and the Center for European Studies, Princeton's Fung Fellowship at the Institute for International and Regional Studies, as well as through visiting scholarships at McGill University's Department of Media and Art History, NYU's Institute for Public Knowledge, and the Centre de Sociologie de l’Innovation among others.
