Working in a Third Space

We will welcome Celia Whitchurch to this seminar, where she will present her work on the concept of Third Space and the status of research support professionals.

Event, MetSem seminar

Salle H405, 28 rue des Saints Pères, 75007 Paris

The 48th session of MetSem, titled "Working in a Third Space",  will take place on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. Celia Whitchurch (joining via video from the Institute of Education, University College London) will present her research.

Introduction to the session

New roles have been created in recent years around the conduct and support of academic research and are increasingly critical to the sourcing of funding, the success of projects, and the impact they achieve. Such roles have in turn led to a blurring of the boundary between academic and professional activity. Space has been created that is unlikely to appear formally in organisation charts and can therefore be said to be invisible. This has led to issues of recognition and legitimacy for people in these roles, as well as structural considerations for institutions in accommodating them. The session will consider the spaces occupied by such individuals, the types of knowledge they create and use, their relationships with others inside and outside the university, as well as implications for professional development and careers.

Practical information

Advance registration is required. For those unable to attend in person, the sessions will also be streamed via Zoom.
