Raising awareness of environmental impact in data science hackathons with the Green AI Arena platform

The 39th session of the MetSem seminar will take place on Thursday, October 12, from 2:30pm to 5pm, and will welcome Paul Gay (LISN, Univ. Paris Saclay and IAPau), for a presentation entitled "Raising awareness of environmental impact in data science hackaton with the Green AI Arena platform".

Session summary:

This seminar will present the Green AI Arena platform, developed by the IAPau association to organize student hackathons. The idea behind this platform is to provide an efficient tool for evaluating data science code. During the hackaton, participants send their models to the platform, which provides a diagnosis of their carbon footprint, abiotic resource consumption and water footprint. An interesting perspective that will be discussed is to complement the limit of the diagnostic, which contains only part of the impacts (scopes 2 and 3) of a data science project, by raising awareness of the indirect effects and rebound effects of this type of project, as well as of the limits inherent in its measurements.
