Manon Berriche awarded a Junior Visiting Scholar Fellowship from the France-Stanford Center

Manon Berriche (postdoctoral researcher at the médialab) received a fellowship for her project on the digitization of participatory democracy in the age of AI.

Founded in partnership with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the France-Stanford Center for Interdisciplinary Studies provides research and event funding to Stanford faculty and students as well as counterparts in France.

Each year, the center offers funding for research projects bringing together scholars and students based in French Institutions and Stanford University. These projects span a wide range of disciplines: humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering, business, and law.

This year, Manon Berriche, postdoctoral researcher at the médialab, was awarded a fellowship for her project on the digitization of participatory democracy in the age of AI.

The project will develop a critical mapping of emerging AI-assisted participatory platforms and examine the different conceptions of democracy embedded in their design. Through interviews with designers and a close study of platforms, their interfaces, documentation, and operating principles, she will investigate how ideas such as inclusion, consensus, pluralism, and representation are translated into concrete design choices.

Manon will be welcome by the Communication department, thanks to the support of Angèle Christin. Her stay at Stanford will allow her to participate in the Critical AI Working Group and to conduct a detailed study of the Stanford Online Deliberation Platform. Developed by the Deliberative Democracy Lab and the Crowdsourced Democracy Team, the platform seeks to bring the principles of Deliberative Polling to large-scale online discussions through structured small-group conversations and automated moderation.
