Post

The transformation of perspective through the ethnography of a territory.

This book, written by three researchers from the médialab, presents an ethnography of the Montceleux plain located in Sevran, in Seine-Saint-Denis. This research reveals, through various disciplines and practices, how a place that initially appears lacking in qualities can be perceived and represented in completely different ways depending on what we pay attention to and what matters to us. Indeed, the descriptions of the Montceleux plain in Sevran are multiple and diverse : an urban void, a land of projects, a zone to be planned, a suburban field, a wasteland in the metropolis, a common space to inhabit. This work seeks to expand the realm of possibilities for this ordinary area, caught up in the challenges of metropolitanization.

A collective reasearch

Led by Robin de Mourat, Clémence Seurat, and Thomas Tari, three researchers from the médialab, this research is collective as it involves residents and guests in Sevran, and it also has the support of La Poudrerie – Théâtre des Habitants, the médialab of Sciences Po, and the Daniel & Nina Carasso Foundation. Over two years, the collective mapped the Montceleux plain, an evolving territory, and experimented with various ways to observe and represent it through maps, technical documents, and field visits. The research employed methods from social sciences, as well as from the arts and tacit knowledge. All of this led to a cycle of workshops, a sound creation (made from narratives, local stories, methodological tools, field visits, and encounters), and a publication.

The book now is available online and for download at this link.
