Summary

Introduced in the 1950s by an American mathematician, regular expressions or “regexes”are sequences of characters which, when executed in an appropriate environment, can be used to select certain (usually redundant) elements from textual data. In particular, regexes can be used to extract certain information or replace certain character strings with others. Originally implemented in Unix, regexes can be used with most programming languages and in everyday software such as word processors. This session offers a practical introduction to regular expressions, with applications in LibreOffice and R.
