Research ethics : definition, risks and debates

The 51st MetSem session will take place on Thursday, July 3, 2025, starting at 2:30pm. We welcome Marie Scot for a session on research ethics.

Session introduction

The session aims to clarify the definitions of the often-confused fields of research ethics, research deontology and scientific integrity; review the main ethical risks posed by humanities and social sciences research, by type of methodology; present the legal/regulatory/professional frameworks deployed in the European/French/institutional context, as well as the mechanisms and procedures in place at Sciences Po. Hot topics such as "academic freedom and scientific integrity" and "AI and scientific integrity" will also be discussed.

Biography

Marie Scot is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS-LSH) and holds an agrégation and a doctorate in history. Her research focuses on both the history of higher education and research (Great Britain, France) and the transnational history of the social sciences.

Marie Scot is currently working on the history of Sciences Po, and is in charge of scientific integrity.
