Call for abstracts: Toronto 4S conference

Gabriel Alcaras (médialab) and Donato Ricci (médialab) are seeking contribution proposals for the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) conference, to be held from 7 to 10 October 2026.

Notice, Call for contributions

This year, the 4S conference is dedicated to the theme of Technopower and aims to highlight how technological elites influence science and innovation. The objective is to explore alternatives to redirect technoscience towards collective wellbeing, justice and sustainability.

Gabriel Alcaras, postdoctoral researcher at médialab, and Donato Ricci, research designer at médialab, are seeking contributions for the event's 26th panel, entitled “Does Generative AI Flip the Script? A Look at Power and Use in Everyday Sociotechnical Practice”. It aims to examine how generative AI systems are implemented in practice and how these situations fuel debates about the relevance of the classic notion of “script” in STS for these systems.

They have a particular interest in studies grounded in fieldwork, workplace observation, experiments, or other inventive investigations of use, including work that foregrounds minority groups or marginal practices.

We invite you to submit your contribution proposal for the 26th panel by 30 April 2026 through the 4S platform: https://lnkd.in/ekh7yjqm

If you have any questions, please contact gabriel.alcaras@sciencespo.fr and donato.ricci@sciencespo.fr
