Digital methods for PSIA students

Students are taught how to appraise and study digital environments using quantitative analysis. The focus is also be put on the design of original research projects making use of quantitative analysis of online empirical data. Students work collectively on their own research question. They collect their own corpus (dataset of tweets, online comments, press articles, etc.) and share their analysis in the form of a website which is now built using the web edition tool Fonio. Their final production is shared below:

  • From Hollywood to Bollywood, the rise of controversy of #metoo tweets in India.[by Bruna DA FONSECA ANDREATTA, Tina EMAMBAKHSH, Chuying PAN, Fatima Sarah RICO] One year after major sexual allegations in Hollywood, the movement has spilled over to India, where major Bollywood stars and journalists started to speak publicly about their experience with sexual harassment. The movement has just begun to provoke a large public debate about sexual abuse, the female status in India and the issue of defamation.
  • Everything alt-right ?. [by Lena Katharina KÜCK, Karanveer SINGH, Raul VAN KLEEF] The discourse around defining the Alt-Right is not a sole matter of mainstream media. Rather, the themes are dynamically proliferated on online platforms such as 4chan. Here, special attention should be allocated to the /pol/ board which is infamous for its politically incorrect posts and favorable positioning towards Trump’s political campaign. On this website, we take a close look at the 'many-to-many' discourse emerging from data-analysis of a section of 4chan's /pol/ board. We hope to contribute with our project to a more thorough understanding of the Alt-Right formation and its contextualization online.
