Program

Adaptation of teaching and learning during the COVID period: lessons learned and future horizons.

by Delphine Grouès and Jean-Pierre Berthet (Institute for Skills and Innovation, Sciences Po)

"How has Sciences Po adapted teaching and learning to the different steps of the pandemic crisis ? What are the main points and key elements of this adaptation ?   What can we learn from this period to develop long term digital education ?"

The promise and peril of AI for post-pandemic pedagogies

by James E. Katz (Division of Emerging Media Studies, Boston University’s College of Communication)

"Various  forms of artificial intelligence (AI) are already becoming commonplace  throughout the educational enterprise, and are increasingly being used  by administrators and teachers, and now even students. In this talk, I  highlight some stringent uses of AI and facial recognition technology in  Chinese schools, noting that their use would be incompatible with  Western values. I also suggest some ways that AI could be used to  support teachers in delivering more effective pedagogy and comment about  an array of other potential uses. The presentation also includes some  survey data about student experiences with remote classes during the  pandemic. Attention is also given to AI’s potential disparate impact on  various learning communities. I close with a call for renewed attention  to preventing abuse of these progressively intrusive technologies."

Rethinking the Role of Video in Post-Pandemic Blended learning

by Jeff Van de Poël (Support Center for Teaching, Lausanne University)

"March 2020 plunged our institutions and their teachers into the abyss of emergency distance learning and this brutal context highlighted the crucial role that video and multimedia could play in these situations. Our institutions had to quickly rethink their software and physical infrastructures while our teachers were able to experiment with the scripting of multimedia vignettes or the recording of their lectures and the integration of these new resources into their teaching. As the situation returns to normal, what are the important questions that an institution must ask itself in order to take advantage of the new infrastructures it has developed, installed and implemented in connection with video production? What are the strategies for guiding teachers in the development of these new types of resources and how can these resources be integrated into a pedagogical reflection in the service of quality teaching? This presentation will share with you the current reflections undertaken by the University of Lausanne on these questions and the courses of action that are currently being considered."

Pedagogical experience at the time of COVID: how to sustain what you learn back in the classroom?

by Bruno Palier (Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics, CNRS, Sciences Po)

"Teaching online has brought multiple innovations to keep students' attention and maintain the pedagogical interest of the course: videos recorded in advance, diversification of activities, use of tools such as wooclap, organized online speaking, sub-group work, etc. What lessons can be learned from these online activities and how can the knowledge acquired be maintained once the students return to the classroom (hybrid)?"
